What is 72?

72 is a co-operative of mash-up artists, open to anyone who produces mash-ups and wants to contribute to our collaborative mash-up projects.

wikipedia's definition of a mash-up:
A mash-up (also known as a bootleg) is a song or composition created by blending two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another to the extent that such works are 'transformative' of original content.

Our aim is to promote musical colaboration between mash-up producers, through structured challenges, for the benefit of the artist and the listener.

This is our third project, the first was the 72 minute long 72 mix, each producer was given 72 hours to add no more than 3 minutes of mashed music to the existing mix. Creating a continuous mix of music of a complexity and diversity that would not be possible for a single artist to produce. http://seventy-two.synthasite.com/

Our second project was a competition to find the worlds best mash-up artist, again, each artist was given 72 hours to create an original mash-up and artists competed 1-on-1 in knock-out rounds until only one artisted remained. http://mashcupclash2009.yolasite.com/

72 has so far recieved the attention of the press including a full editorial article about the first 72 mix and being awarded 'Download of the Week' by the Guardian newspaper. It has also been played in part by several radio stations including XFM.

Future projects: discussions are currently taking place regarding potential partnerships and the commercial sponsorship of Mashcupclash 2010, which will run from June 11th to coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
